Premium Grade High Performance Polyurethane Non Sag Elastomeric Sealant for Professional Construction and Repair
Key Features and Benefits
+
Maximize the longevity of your building envelope with a sealant engineered for excellence.
- Durable: Designed to withstand harsh environmental conditions without cracking or becoming brittle.
- High Elasticity: Capable of ±35% joint movement, making it ideal for dynamic structural joints displaying flexible consistency with exceptional adhesion and is high in elasticity and cures to a tough, durable, and flexible consistency with exceptional cut and tear-resistance.
- Excellent Adhesion: Bonds aggressively to most construction materials, including concrete, masonry, glass, and wood, often without the need for priming.
- Weather Resistance: Excellent resistance to aging and weathering, ensuring long-term performance in exterior applications and tough climates around the globe.
- User-Friendly Application: Available in a standard Sikaflex 1a 10.1 fl oz cartridge allowing for easy gunning and tooling in vertical and overhead joints with many users appreciating the fast tack free time.
- Safety & Compliance: Potable water approved (NSF/ANSI Standard 61) and meets Federal Specifications. Urethane based; suggested by EPA as a caulk and crack sealant for Radon reduction.
- Green Concrete: Can be applied to green and damp concrete. Damp Concrete applications must be cured at least 24 hours.
- Multi-Use: Premium grade high performance polyurethane based non sag elastomeric sealant. Sikaflex 1A is suitable for vertical and horizontal joints and can be readily placed at temperatures as low as 40°F (pre heating my be needed) but should not be used in continuous water immersion (except in specialized cases) or in contact with asphaltic materials.
- Chemical Resistance: Jet fuel resistant, water, diluted acids, and diluted alkalines.
- Paintable: Caulking can be painted after fully curing, which typically takes 4–7 days, but compatibility testing is recommended first with water-, oil- and rubber based paints.
Use Cases & Applications
+
Sikaflex 1a is the preferred choice for sealing expansion and control joints in a variety of settings:
- Commercial Construction: Perimeter sealing around windows, doors, and skylights. Sikaflex 1A is formulated for a wide range of joint applications with a fast tack free time where the sealant depth does not exceed a maximum depth of 1/2 inch.
- Masonry & Concrete: Sealing expansion joints in building facades and concrete panels such as tilt up panels, joints walls, canal and reservoir joints, and most horizontal and vertical joints.
- Facility Maintenance: Repairing submerged conditions in non-potable water reservoirs, general facility upkeep, window and door frames, and common roofing detail applications. Sikaflex-1a is effective for sealing joints in building facades, sidewalks, and driveways to accommodate structural shifting.
- Residential Projects: Ideal for weekend warriors requiring a professional-grade seal for driveway cracks or foundation repairs. Many users find this caulking to be odorless and non-staining which is a significant advantage for indoor applications.
Approvals & Standards
+
| ASTM C 920 Type S, Grade NS, Class 35, Use T, NT, O, M, A, I | SWRI validated ac. to ASTM C719 (No. 0123-S0128) |
| Meets Federal specification TT-S-00230C, Type II, Class A | Certified to NSF ANSI CAN 61 for potable water (meets applicable requirements for NSF/ANSI 600) |
| Meets Canadian standard CAN/CGSB 19.13-M87. | EPA suggested caulk and crack sealant for Radon reduction |
Surface Preparation Guidelines
+
All large and small joint surfaces must be clean, sound, frost-free, and free of oil, grease, curing compounds, sealers, and any other foreign materials. Remove all contaminants thoroughly. For optimal bond strength, a slightly roughened or mechanically abraded surface is recommended, particularly on dense substrates such as concrete or masonry. Cold substrates may require pre heating or thawing the surface prior to application. The service temperature range for Sikaflex-1a is -40°F to +170°F.
Install bond breaker tape or an appropriate backer rod to prevent three-sided adhesion at the base of the joint. Proper joint design allows Sikaflex 1a to expand and contract as intended without bond failure.
Priming is not typically required for most common construction substrates. However, primer may be necessary if adhesion testing indicates a need or if the sealant will be subjected to continuous or intermittent water immersion after curing. Refer to the Sikaflex Primer Technical Data Sheet for substrate-specific recommendations.
Green & Damp Concrete Applications
Sikaflex 1A can be applied to green concrete 24 hours after pouring and to damp concrete 1 hour after getting wet. Control joints must be cut within 8 hours prior to application, and expansion joint forms should be removed a minimum of 4 hours before the sealant is installed.
For wet or damp concrete applications, all excess or standing water must be removed. Allow the surface to dry for at least 60 minutes (1 hour) before applying sealant. Final cure times can take 4 to 7 days (73F / 50% relative Humidity). This caulking skins over in 2–4 hours and fully cures in 4–7 days at 70°F, 50% relative humidity.
Joint Design & Safety
For optimal performance, maintain a 2:1 width-to-depth ratio when designing joints for Sikaflex-1a, with a minimum depth of 1/4 inch and a maximum depth of 1/2 inch. Make sure to tool sealant to ensure full contact with joint walls and remove any entrapped air.
Safety precautions for Sikaflex-1a include using protective gear and ensuring well-ventilated areas to avoid skin and eye contact.
Available Colors
Sikaflex 1a is available in a 10.1 fl oz cartridge and offered in a wide range of architectural colors, including Almond, Aluminum Gray, Aluminum Stone, Beige, Black, Buff, Capitol Tan, Colonial White, Dark Bronze, Hartford Green, Limestone, Medium Bronze, Off White, Redwood Tan, Stone, and White.
Caulking must be fully cured prior to painting with acrylic, elastomeric, or rubber based paints.
Cleanup, Equipment & Application
+
Cleanup & Removal
Sikaflex 1a can be cleaned/removed using general soap detergent mixed with water, Acetone, and/or Xylene. If this product has fully cured you can use mechanical means to clean using a razor blade to cut out/away the sealant and then a wire brush to clean the surface if the substrate (surface) can tolerate it, if not, use a solvent. For removal, use personal protective equipment and remove excess product without direct contact, placing it in a container for disposal.
Application Equipment
- Caulking / Sealant applicator (caulking gun) such as our Albion B26 for 10 ounce cartridges
- Caulking / sealant nozzles or tips
- Wire brush
- Razor blades
- Blue painters tape or duct tape
- Solvent to clean up such as Acetone or Xylene
- Primer to prep the substrate: Sikaflex 429/202 for concrete and masonry, Sikaflex 260/205 for urethane or interlaminar, or Sikaflex 449 for plastics
For complete technical specifications, cure times, warranty information, and application guidance, refer to the official Sikaflex 1a Technical Data Sheet linked in the documents section before installation.
